If I'm a Gringo, Then You're a Spic

You know, a lot of people like to call me a racist. I have no idea why, I don’t typically judge people based solely on their race. Typically they have to open their mouths before I start to dislike them. But it seems that one particular ethnic group likes to accuse me of being a blatant racist more than anyone else, and that ethnic group just so happens to be Hispanics. Which is funny, because from what I can tell there is not a single more politically incorrect group of people around than them.

First off, let’s take the incessant use of the word “Gringo.” That’s a rather derogatory term for a White person, isn’t it? It carries with it a connotation of blandness, corniness, lack of dancing ability and probably sexual dysfunction if you ask the right people. And yet the term is used so blatantly there are even movies out with “Gringo” in the title. Let me tell you, if I made a film about an interracial marriage and called it “Spic Wedding” I would be sued, lynched, fired and held up as a hero by most of Fox News. But use “Gringo” and for some reason it’s funny. No, no, not so much to me. It’s actually pretty fucking offensive and I think every time a Hispanic refers to me as such I will from then on refer to them as a Spic.

And is there one Asian guy in Miami NOT named “Chino?” It’s funny, you know, call a Cuban a Mexican and its like you called his mother a whore. But apparently every guy with slanty eyes who gets red when he drinks is Chinese to a Latin. So to my Asian friends out there, next time some Hispanic calls you chino, just call him “Mexicano” and see how he likes it. If he tries to correct you, politely inform him that your assessment of him is about as accurate as his is of you, and if he’d like to not be referred to as an ethnicity he is not, he should try doing the same.

Similarly, any black guy in Miami is referred to as “Negro.” If he’s lucky. Wait for your Cuban daughter to bring home a black man, and see what Papi says. Or, worse, call a dark-skinned Hispanic “Negro” and see if they don’t beat you senseless.

My point here is not necessarily to say that Hispanic people are racist, just that they are far more politically incorrect than I am. In fact, most of their daily vocabulary makes me look downright diplomatic. So, Hispanic America, if you want me and others to stop ripping on you and stop lumping you all together as Mexicans, try doing the same yourself. I am not a Gringo any more than you are a Spic. My boy Tuan Tran is no more Chinese than you are Mexican. And that black guy over there probably doesn’t want to be called the Spanish equivalent of “Darky” all day long.

As I have stated before, the double standard of racism in our culture is absolutely ridiculous. You can say pretty much whatever you want about white people but can’t even refer to the bad hair of minorities without losing your job. But in Miami, I AM the minority in every sense of the word and as such I want the majority to start being held accountable for not being sensitive enough in their speech. Just because I am too. So the next time you hear someone call you a gringo, flip out and lose your shit like every other minority does when they hear you using an ethnic slur. If nothing else, it should give them pause about the blatant offensiveness of their daily vernacular.

Back to talking about Spanish people again. Seriously, this topic accounts for 90% of your posts. Boring.

Absolutely fantastic and right on the money. Couldn't agree more. Fortunately for me I don't live on either US coast or in a top 10 metro area so we don't have the huge hispanic population. Actually I like hispanic women and culture and stuff but I dispise the cultural double standard non minorities are subjected to.

You've gotta be kidding. You constantly write derogatory shit about hispanics and their culture, women, etc. and you're gonna whine about something as inoffensive as being called "gringo." You know as well as I do that the word "spic" is meant to be offend just as "nigger" or "kyke" is. I know plenty of gringos who refer to themselves as gringos (without a trace of irony) but you'll never hear hispanics call themselves "spics."

and if this is the best you can come up with on a Friday afternoon, then yes this blog has jumped the shark. why dont you write about how broward got its name, much more interesting.

I, as a former annual Laraza invitation recipient, would like to speak for all Hispanics here when I say we are all sorry for our potentially damaging and hateful naming convention. No harm was ever intended. I like to call white people gringo’s in the loving way I would call the name of my dog, cat, Mormons, or any other animal that is sweet and loving, yet lacks the mental cognition required to play a rousing game of Jenga or screw in a light bulb.

It probably stems from a long history of entitlement. For example I grew up calling…say a phone a “phone”. Now all of a sudden if I learned that all the phones in the world where somehow deeply offended that I held this title for them, I might try to stop using the word “phone” and start calling them the preferred name – Digital Inter Communication kit (nice acronym!) but not only would it be difficult to make this change, but it’s much less elegant philosophically speaking. Why should I change to accommodate you when no ill intent was pointed. They are ones who are getting offended for what appears to me as no reason at all.

There is an eastern philosophy that goes, ‘elegance is found in your reaction to an action rather than the attempt to change the action itself.’
It means that if there something you don’t like – you can’t really (or shouldn’t) do squat to change it. HOWEVER, you have all the control to decide your own reaction to said event. It’s up to you to flip out, or let it slide or decide if it’s even offensive in the first place. Maybe this is too high brow. I know my Mexicano brethren would understand.

Oh forget it. I’m going to go play Jenga with a Jew.

I'm just going to call a spade a spade (no pun intended) and say that the majority of the latins I've met here - especially the Cubans - are among the most racist people I have met anywhere.

I also believe (my opinion - take it for what it's worth) that the term "gringo" isn't exactly used affectionately. The context in which I usually hear it would be like calling a black person "colored." Not as bad as the N-word, but not really politically correct.

Posts like these are why I tune in.

Latins do have a tendency to use in their language vulgarity overtly. Their society is loosely structured around some level of a shadow cast system. They support this system linguistically by calling each other, Flaca (skinny), Gordo (Fatty) and as you mention Chinito (Little China Man), and have you seen them condescendingly calling the waiter: Jefe (Boss). Do not forget the Latins in Miami are not representative of the people of the countries they are from, they are mostly the cream of the crop, hierarchically, propbably the top 2%-3% economically, they were mostly comfortable and able to afford coming over.

it's funny you used hee seop choi;s photo, since literally every latin guy i knew who followed the marlins always referred to him as "chino" even though he's korean. of course when i point out this discrepency, they brush it off saying "eh, same ting."

miami247 - while i agree with the first half of your post, the second half where you say "they are mostly the cream of the crop, hierarchically, propbably the top 2%-3% economically, they were mostly comfortable and able to afford coming over." really? if they're the most "economically comfortable" how come 90% of the busboys in miami are latin? (and no they're not all cubans.)

Good post WD. Yes there is a lot of racism among Hispanics.

At 10:52 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dude I'm with you. I'm Latino and I haven't found anything in this blog to be racist. I'll get to that in a minute.

First Miami247 is off his head if he is calling the large amount of gutter trash masquerading as Hispanics (as well as good, quality people) "the cream of the crop". That's some Miami Latin shit to make white people find Latins more acceptable. These are Cubans that include both thugs and fugitives who were part of that whorehouse/den of iniquity (courtesy of the good ol' USA) prior to the revolution. In reality Cuba was also home to a lot of losers who were immigrating to the island too. Most Cubans have come since the Revolution and are economic refugees. But the larger portion of Latin Miami isn't Cuban. You have Puerto Ricans and Dominicans who you can lump in with the Cuban economic refugees who decided I guess that NYC was just a cold ghetto waiting. Central Americans who fled war and the poorest countries in the hemisphere just to be insulted by Cubans because they look too Indian. Then there are the South Americans who have the whole array- poor refugees who some of whom look to Indian, and my favorite, the vacuous, tight jean, too much perfume and make-up crowd and their husbands whose entire claim to an elevated position on the hierarchal status was that they hate people that are darker than them. The last group had made their living off of cock-sucking for Chiquita or Exxon before some of the locals kicked them out to Miami where they stashed the national public weal, and they're garbage for it. Done there.

I just think you call bullshit with a lot of what's going on and backlash because of it. I have missed reading a few posts in the past couple of months but from what I've read you generally talk about the elephants in the room, and Miami is a veritable game preserve come to that. Don't get brow beaten into editing yourself to conform to the unique form of PC that goes on Miami.

I notice that some people who aren't So Fla residents may sometimes co-sign not understanding the unique world of Miami. Much of the behavior (especially in its context) couldn't fly elsewhere. I think you make more than an effort to explain what makes our little corner of paradise gone awry such a unique place.

PS Andy, it is b/c of the association and proximity of blacks and Hispanics, at least at the time of initial arrival in the country. Overtown and Little Havana; Liberty City and Allapattah/Wynwood; Harlem and East Harlem; Dorchester and Roxbury; South Central and Watts, etc. It sort of left its mark on the Hispanic American idiom I think. There is also the phrase "negrito" sort of like an endearment phrase (not racist, has its roots in Latin) which I've heard people also make the link to, but I think its a reach.

the marlins traded un negro for un chino.

No, I dont think you're racist, I dont think youd be able to live here if you really hated latins that much, it's just sometimes frustrating dealing with another culture and their quirks.

but, again, getting offended by the word gringo is pretty petty. you need thicker skin...

Do all U.S. Americans constitute one ethnic group or one race? Of course not. The practice in this country of lumping together a variety of ethnic and racial groups under the moniker of Hispanics or Latinos is a clear manifestation of the unbridled ignorance present throughout our fair land. First of all, Hispanics or Latinos are not a race, thus comparing so called blacks or whites to Hispanics is absolutely absurd. There are Hispanics of European, West African, East Asian, Middle Eastern (Turkish, Arab, Jewish)and Amerindian (American Indian)descent, and of any combination thereof. To call someone from Central America an Indian is not incorrect if that person is, like millions of Central Americans, an American aborigine (if you pay attention you will note that, for example, many Guatemalans when speaking to each other will acatually speak in Kalchikek or a variety of other American Indian languages; Mexicans from the nearby state of Oaxaca speak Zapotec, Mixes, Chinantec, Mixtec, etc....why? Because the languages of these indigenous people survived the conquest). Whether certain individuals dislike Indians, blacks, East Asians or others, is not a product of being part of this overly simple construct--"Latino" or "Hispanic". It is rather similar to what all groups display at the individual level with regards to the other. In Mexico, some white Mexicans put down black and Indian Mexicans. In Brazil some black Brazilians put down Indian Brazilians. Among militant Chicanos in this country it is in vogue to put down anything European about their Mexican-American brethren. Some white Cubans, white Venezuelans, white Colombians, white Mexicans, white Puerto Ricans, white Argentines, white Brazilians, white Peruvians put down black Latinos of any stripe.
And guess what? The same can be said about white US Americans. Dark skinned Amerindian Latinos are put down by black US Americans in California. It is true that many Latin Americans use the term 'chino' for all types of peoples from East Asia. Incorrect, but how often does our society lump together all of these people under the term Asian (which absurdly excludes other Asians like Afghanis, Iranians, Indians from India)? All of these generalizations are a product of ignorance.

anon1- Spanish people are Spanish; would you call Jamaicans, HongKongnese, Australians, Bahamians, etc. English because they share the same language?

everybody-the word gringo is popular among Mexicans and others who ape their use; real Cubans say 'yanquis' not gringos.
Saying someone is half white and half Cuban is patently absurd. Is said Cuban white, black, Chinese?
Do we say somebody is half white and half American (US)? Remember when Nazis use to make this non-sensical distinction? German Jews where not white because the state said so.

Let me try and guess who "Anonymous" is being that he is too much of a pussy to even give himself a online name.

He is most definitely of white, european descent. Probably Irish. His father drank himself to death a few years after getting laid off at the factory, which was probably owned by a non-white-european minority.

This was all years after his mother died at 57 from too many Pall-Mall 100's. Both parents were alcoholics and taught their kids how to effectively hate anyone who wasn't like them. Both parents openly used the word "nigger" and "spic" at all family gatherings. Anonymous probably was brainwashed into thinking that the bulk of his parent's misfortunes and general unhappiness were caused by the ethnic groups they hated. So being that Anonymous loved his parents dearly and hated to see them suffer, he joined them in their hatred, because the slightest challenge to his parent's unreasonable and unfair views towards Blacks and Hispanics would have met Anonymous staring at the end of a studded belt, or a bottle of bourbon, maybe even a midnight visit from Dad for a little "anal action."

Yep, I'll betcha that's the type of person who wrote this.

I am latino and I don't find "gringo" offensive (but it doesn't mean I'm calling every american "gringo"), let me tell you why:

As far as I know "Gringo" means "A person who doesn't speak spanish" but there is another theory, during the battle of the alamo the mexicans used to yell to the american army "GREENS GO" or "GREEN GO" because their uniform was green, so the mexicans adopt it as "gringos" or "gringo" to call all the americans this way (not only white people we use it for all americans...)

The first theory is more credible tho.

Greetings...

PS I hope you undertand me and sorry if I spell something wrong I dont usually post comments in English 'cause I dont live in the US :P

It's wild the way Puerto Ricans managed to jump on the entitlement bandwagon after affirmative action was created for blacks. And over the decades other hispanics such as dominicans, cubans and Mexicans have the ability to receive benefits other Americans couldn't get if they wanted them.

On the note of real racism.

I agree with the OP slightly. The whole part that's fucked up. Is most people are racist for a reason, not because they are like the kkk or hitler and if your not white, then your not right. It that fact that if you call a white person a cracker, everyone laughs, cause if the white guy gets offended he's a pussy. But if you call a black person in the crowd a nigger, everyone get offended, he pulls a gun, and shit dosen't end well.

And sure, you can go ahead and defend black people, OMG they arent all like that. And you would be right. Like the black people on the News channel doing reports. They aren't black people. They were at one point, then they were given knowledge, and taught how to talk and speak like a white person.

It just the fact stands, what words that are said to white people are they allowed to get offended by? Hispanics get offended by Spic. Black get offended by nigger and monkey. Even tho the way they resort to fighting and violence makes them no better then the monkeys in the jungle.

What would it be like, If in the world, white people turned into niggers, and you were in a club, and you called him a cracker, and he shot you in the stomach a few times, and every other black person who insulted white people.

Then the world would know about how equally racist this country is, give the niggers free shit, they're people used to be enslaved. Give the Ninja spics shit cause they snuck into our country. Tax the white people more money because they don't act like pieces of shit.

I just wished they took the time to make this country a better place. Photo's and fingerprints at every Social Security Center, So people can't collect three checks, because they have some fake ID's.

This is a country of hate, jealousy, and fucking ignorance. Sure you can say im ignorant, or whatever you want for that matter. But the fact stands i formed my opinions based off of life experiences, and i probably won't come back to this forum to see if anyone said anything.
